de Blasio's Concession
Statement from Bill de Blasio:"I've given this race my all, but my colleague, Christine Quinn, has the support to win. Now it's time to unite the Council and ensure a strong Speaker, so I am supporting Chris to be the next Speaker of the City Council. I am grateful to all of my colleagues who came together in a progressive, multi-borough coalition to back my own candidacy, but now I'm urging them to join me in supporting Chris."
"Chris and I have worked closely over the last four years as colleagues, and for years before that as staff members in government. I have the utmost confidence that Chris will be a great Speaker who will lead our Council in a progressive direction and strengthen the Council's role of representing every neighborhood of our city, with a special emphasis on protecting the most vulnerable of our fellow New Yorkers."

I guess that 14 member block he was counting on not so strong after all.

whatever you may think about deblasio, he's a classy guy.

Classy guy, I'd hate to see the crowd you normally hang around.

The 14 member block was a myth. Tom Manton was the only vote that counted and he's the big winner, along with Quinn, and anybody close to the Queens party.

Bill is a rising star and Quinn only won because 1.Brooklyn is not united and 2.Quinn will be more controlled by people in power then De Blasio. Make no mistakes Bill would of been a fabulous speaker only problem is he is too independent and can't be controlled by the mafia types in power. Just look at the money folks remember the money you receive in politics can be indicative of whom owns you. I would say labor union money is much more about power to the people then REAL ESTATE. Make no mistakes it was a BACK ROOM DEAL. It does not mean that Speaker Quinn is the best one for the job.............. it means the power brokers felt they could control her more!

Anonymous 9:53, you have to be kidding me. So a Council Speaker controlled by the likes of 1199, 32 BJ and Bertha Lewis and ACORN makes more sense?
Bill did not get the Speakership because he can not be trusted. He is too much of an insider and yes, no party boss is going to play second fiddle to any organization. He is too connected to too many other forces and that is what wiped him out. He is a politcal opportunist willing to do what ever possible to advance himself.
This is not to say that Quinn is any better, not by any stretch of the imagination, neither is good for the body.

Previous person please explain, yes it makes more sense to be for the people if that means connected to unions vs REAL ESTATE. Even these days there is a difference. Who cares if Bill is a political opportunist. De Blasio "can't be trusted" because powers that be do not trust him. You obviously know him pretty well to say he would do whatever possible to advance himself can you educate me on that one. I do not see concerning yourself w/ working family issues as an example of your statement
