We Love Our Toys

Especially the Speakermobile

We thought it random enough when the minister at today's ceremonies prayed for "Speaker Quinn," before she was officially Speakerized. But given what we recently discovered, he may not have been so far off base.

It so happens that Speaker-select Quinn (aka Council Member Christine Quinn at the time) drove up to the City Council in the black Suburban Speakermobile, with full security detail in tow (Gifford Miller style).

The aesthetics ... ummmm ... odd.

I wonder at what point the rest of them fell out of the race. . . .

It certainly doesn't look good that Quinn used this Speaker perk without first being crowned. Do the party bosses have that much sway?

It also doesn't look good that she made staffers just stand out there in the rotunda...not exactly gracious. Who does she think does the work that results in credit to the Council Members? Does she think that the party bosses restore a constituent's closed Food Stamp case, for example?

Regarding staff staying in rotunda, it was ridculous. But it is also the same way it when Miller was coronated. It is bullshit. All of her people were inside, it was staff for all other members who were left in the rotunda.

Quinn's staff was inside, as well they should have been, considering how much work they did. Also inside were neighborhood community activists from around the City, elected officials, lobbyists, community board chairs, donors - the people who make the City go 'round.

Grow up, people - support staff is support staff, and they work hard, but don't get first dibs on seats in the Chambers.

Maria is that you??? Everyone knows you've been salivating for this BUT there are 50 other council members who do the people's work and they have staff that work for constituents, with lobbyists, cb members, activists, and even the administration, you know the pple who will make the Speaker look good or bad... FUNNY thing is support staff are pulled away from their work to fill those very seats when no one else shows up for a hearing or meeting. Hmmmm....

Was that move an omen? Is Quinn just a smarter, more newsworthy version of Miller? We should know in about 3 months, when the honeymoon is over.

In fact...Christine ran for office initially based on what she said was her activist constituent record while chief of staff to Tom Duane. While her s/election as Speaker was clearly not based on her constituent record, let's keep in mind that she had to have first won election as a council member before she could ever have become s/elected as speaker.

What hard work did Quinn's staff do? Do get her s/elected as speaker? Maybe. But I know that when my relative - who is Quinn's constituent - asked her office for help on a constituent matter, no work -let alone hard work-was done to assist.
